Introduction to Pottery
4 week course

This beginner's course is a 4 week introduction to the world of pottery, and is suitable for anyone who has little or no previous experience with clay. Each class is 2.5 hours of hands-on learning, covering a wide variety of makers' skills and pottery disciplines.
You’ll learn:
- how to prepare and wedge clay
- to make pots using pinching techniques
- to make pots using coiling techniques
- how to carve pots
- to wheel throw cylindrical forms
- how to trim pots on the wheel to refine the shape and adding foot rings
- how to use slab building techniques
- which tools you need and how to use them
- basic glazing
Beginners Pottery
6 week course

Tuesday or Wednesday evenings 6-8.30pm. Start date 4th or 5th March 2025
This secondary beginners course dives further into the basics of ceramics, exploring more advanced making skills. This six-week course is intended as a follow-up to our “Introduction to Pottery”. Suitable for people who have completed intro to pottery or have some prior experience of working with clay.
You'll learn:
- techniques for making larger coil pots
- how to wheel throw a wider range of forms
- how to make handles & lids
- how to join pots together and attach parts to your pot
- how to use decorating slips
- how to use Sgraffito technique
- how to work with leather hard slabs
- more advanced glazing techniques
Wheel Throwing Taster Session
2 Hour Session
£60
The purpose of the taster session is to give hands-on experience of making wheel thrown ceramics. Getting a sense of the studio and the range of possibilities presented by the clay material. This workshop includes a practical introduction to the core elements of wheel throwing, focussing on the fundamental skill of forming a cylinder. Being guided on how to centre the clay, open the form, lift the walls and how to manipulate the clay to create your finished work.
With group size limited to three participants there is plenty of scope for one-to-one tutored assistance. Following the session the pieces are glazed and fired twice. Once complete, collection can be arranged from the studio.

Membership & Drop-in Session
Membership and drop-in sessions are designed for hobby potters with prior experience working with clay, providing returning students an opportunity to further refine their pottery skills through our Open Studio sessions. These memberships enable students to engage with the medium independently, at their own pace, while benefiting from the support and guidance of a facilitated group environment. For those new to clay or requiring more guidance, we recommend enrolling in our beginner courses.
